"Wait Time"

"Wait time" refers to the amount of time teachers wait before asking a student to answer a question. Leaving more time for students to think can lead to answers from more pupils, can produce better answers and, generally, improve classroom discussions. When linked with the "No Hands Up" technique pupils who don't usually raise their hands are more likely to come up with an answer.

Teachers who increase their "wait time" have found:

  • their questioning strategies tend to be more varied and flexible
  • a decrease in the quantity and increase in the quality of the the questions they ask
  • they ask additional questions that require higher level thinking on the part of their students
