High Quality PD

High quality ELA instruction occurs in a classroom that engages all students and has teachers who:

  • Model the use of meaning-making processes and effective language strategies, as they are applied to learning situations and working  with texts;
  • Think-aloud during that modelling;
  • Create spaces for students to ‘try out’ meaning-making processes and effective learning strategies (guided practice to independent practice);
  • Allow students opportunities to work in a variety of different ways: pairs, groups of varying sizes and individually;
  • Offer targeted, developmentally appropriate, ‘just in time’ feedback;
  • Encourage students to share what they are ‘thinking about’ or have learned with peers;
  • Help students to transfer their learning to new situations.
